LAS VEGAS, NV — Saturday night’s college football schedule brings a lot of jaw-dropping surprises, including the Texas Longhorns’ massive defeat to the Maryland Terrapins and the Florida Gators’ no-show over the Michigan Wolverines. However, the Howard Bison and Liberty Flames managed to clinch off some of the biggest stunners we may see this new season.

The Howard Bison rattled off a 43-40 win over the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) Rebels that was floated by a total of 330 yards of offense and three touchdowns from quarterback Caylin Newton — the younger sibling of Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton — and made history in the process. It’s considered as the largest upset vs. the spread in college football history and the first win over an FBS nemesis in Howard Bison football program’s history.

The Bison — who were 45-point underdogs — pulled off the biggest point-spread upset in the history of college football by shocking and defeating the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas.

The Howard Bison stringed by 12 points with 6:45 time left on the clock in the third quarter, but Caylin Newton refused to let them go softly.

While UNLV Rebels isn’t a powerhouse college football team, it made some sense why the Howard Bison — now being governed by former Virginia head coach Mike London — was such a massive underdog. The HOward are 2-19 over the past couple of seasons at college football’s second level and were defeated 104-27 in matchups against the Maryland and Rutgers a season ago. Howard Bison quarterback Caylin Newton had an indeed huge game. Caylin Newton completed 21 carries for 190 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Newton also was 15-of-26 passing for 140 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The Howard Bison weren’t the only big underdog team to win last Saturday night college football either. Liberty Flames, a team making the rebuilding to college football’s top level in 2018, outscored the Baylor Bears 48-45. Liberty closed as 33.5-point underdogs in the contest.
