Police authorities arrested a suspect on Tuesday night, September 5, after a woman who was reportedly kidnapped by her former boyfriend in California last week was found safe in Nevada.
The 52-year-old Joseph Hetzel was apprehended at around 6 P.M. PT in Las Vegas without incident, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. Hetzel was in charged with kidnapping and carjacking, and was being detained on $1 million bail out fine.
Virginia Paris, the ex-girlfriend, made a couple of phone calls to a family member shortly before 9 P.M. local time on Monday, September 4, stating that she was coming home and that she was near the City of Henderson in Nevada, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 11 o’clock in the evening on Monday, Hetzel allegedly dropped Paris off at the Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino in Henderson, Nevada, and then drove away, the sheriff has said.
Paris was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released. She has since been reunited with her family, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Paris allegedly told the officials that Hetzel was headed to Utah.
Paris was allegedly kidnapped by Hetzel shortly after she left work on Friday, September 1st, in Solvang, California, the sheriff’s office said.
The two were seen on Saturday at a Starbucks coffee shop in Goodyear, Arizona, where the kidnapped woman apparently told a customer that she needed help, the authorities said.
Hetzel allegedly grabbed Paris, dragged her out of the Starbucks, kicked her into her getaway vehicle and drove away.
The two checked out of a motorist-hotel in Valle, Arizona, Monday morning, the sheriff’s office added.
Paris’ vehicle was found on early Tuesday morning abandoned in Mesquite, Nevada, the sheriff’s office said.
